How to properly wash your intimate parts? Everything you need to know

Properly washing your intimate parts is not only a health issue, it is also a self-confidence issue. Indeed, beyond the intimate discomforts, such as mycoses or cystitis, which can result from poor intimate hygiene, odors and vaginal discharge can disturb your confidence and your sexuality. As an e-concept store dedicated to female intimacy, we have made intimate hygiene our hobbyhorse. In this article, find out everything you need to know to properly wash your intimate parts.

To remember

  • One intimate wash per day is enough to ensure good intimate hygiene. Even during menstruation or during physical exertion, it is not necessary to increase this frequency at the risk of causing discomfort.
  • The four steps of good intimate hygiene are: wash the vulva, wash the anus (in that order), rinse well with clean water and pat dry. While fingers and water are enough to ensure good cleaning, a pH-neutral soap can also be used to feel fresh. Vaginal douching should be avoided at all costs, as it can cause significant disruption to the vaginal flora.
  • Periods are not dirty. So there is no need for any specific intimate hygiene during this period or just after. Using intimate wipes during your period is a great solution to feel fresh during this period.

How often should you wash your intimate parts properly ?

Before offering you the four steps to good personal hygiene , it seemed essential to us to dwell on this first question that many of you ask us: how often should you wash your personal hygiene?

One intimate wash per day is enough to ensure good hygiene.

More than one daily intimate wash can actually be harmful. In fact, it can weaken your body by disrupting the balance of your intimate flora which does not have time to self-regulate.

If you want to freshen up during the day, especially after sports, sexual intercourse or if you have your period, we recommend that you opt for pH-neutral intimate wipes. They will freshen up your intimate area while being gentler than a full intimate wash.

🌈 On Gapianne, we have selected for you the biodegradable intimate wipes My Lubie . At 99.6% natural 🌱, they guarantee you a refreshed intimacy in one go. And as a bonus, they are directly flushable in the toilet after use.

4 steps to properly wash your intimate parts

Step #1: Clean your vulva

The first step in good personal hygiene is cleaning your vulva.

To do this, carefully clean the labia minora and majora from front to back. Using your fingers and clean water for this first step is enough. We recommend spreading your legs slightly to better access these areas.

Adding an intimate soap can help you feel fresher, however. Unlike other soaps, intimate soaps have a neutral pH so as not to disrupt the natural acidity of the intimate flora.

🌈 The intimate cleansing gel - Wumi is our favorite and your favorite: you love it! Thanks to orange blossom hydrosol, mallow and aloe vera, moisturizing, soothing and softening active ingredients, it provides an immediate feeling of cleanliness and freshness. Composed of 98% natural ingredients, it is made in France 🇫🇷 and organic 🌱.

If you feel it is necessary to use a glove because touching your intimate parts bothers you, change it every day: use one side for cleaning your vulva and another for cleaning your anus. This will limit the risk of transferring bacteria from your anus to your vulva.

Step #2: Clean your anus

The second step in good personal hygiene is cleaning your anus.

Wash the anal area, without going back to your vulva. Again, you can do this with clean water and your fingers. This time, we recommend that you squat down to better access this part of your body.

Using the same intimate soap as for cleaning your vulva can be interesting to feel fresher and cleaner. Selecting a soap with a neutral pH is indeed important for this area too.

🌈 The organic intimate cleansing bread - Baubo is another of our bestsellers. Composed of 100% natural ingredients, it is made in France 🇫🇷, certified organic and solid. Its formula is guaranteed to be fragrance-free, alcohol-free, paraben-free, preservative-free, aluminum-free, petrochemical-free, GMO-free. Although soap-free, it foams enormously, which will bring comfort to your intimate areas and give you a feeling of cleanliness.

As for using a glove, use a clean side to clean this area. You will feel much fresher this way!

Step #3: Rinse your intimate area

The third step is simply to rinse your vulva and then your anus thoroughly with clean water.

When you perform your intimate hygiene, stay on the surface and do not rinse inside your vagina. This practice, called vaginal douching, is not only useless but it can also be harmful. Your vagina is naturally equipped to perform its own cleaning (white discharge partly plays this role). Douching will tend to disrupt the balance of your vaginal flora and lead to the development of vaginal mycosis or bacterial vaginosis .

Step #4: Dry your intimate area

The fourth and final step of good personal hygiene is to dry your private parts.

To do this, use your personal towel and gently pat the entire area. Avoid rubbing: this could be irritating to your private parts and could move bacteria from the anus to your vulva.

Bonus: Moisturize your intimate area

When you get out of the toilet and before putting on your underwear or pajamas, you may feel a tight feeling in your vulva and anus. Moisturizing these areas is sometimes necessary, especially after sexual intercourse or if you have your period and wear menstrual panties or sanitary towels in contact with your intimate areas.

Several intimate products can help you naturally maintain the hydration of your intimate area and protect it from minor external aggressions:

🌈 At Gapianne, to moisturize your vulva, we really like the Baûbo Balm . Rich and oily, it nourishes and moisturizes your vulva, enveloping it in a cream that protects it. Perfect in case of irritations linked to sexual intercourse or friction, in particular because of the seams of your underwear. 100% natural 🌱, it is made in France 🇫🇷 like all the brand's products, certified organic and gynecologically tested. Not suitable for internal use, this product cannot be used as a lubricant.

🌈 If it's your anus that tickles, we have selected for you, from the same brand, the ointment for anal irritation from Baûbo . Apply this cream to the slightest anal discomfort: hemorrhoids, anal fissures, itching, small pimples... Its thick texture envelops your behind, treats small inconveniences and protects it from friction. Baume Q is the first cream for irritated anus, 100% natural, made in France 🇫🇷 and 100% organic 🌱. Caution: external use only!

🌈 Please note: these two balms are not interchangeable. The vulva balm was tested specifically on the vulvar mucosa, while the Q balm was tested on the anal mucosa. The vulva balm nourishes, softens and soothes the vulva while the Q balm is dedicated to nourishing, moisturizing and pampering the irritated anus. If you suffer from vulvar and anal discomfort, we recommend our vulva and Q duo pack .

And during menstruation?

First of all, a reminder is necessary: periods are not dirty. There is therefore no reason to increase the number of intimate hygiene procedures during your period or just after it. Keep the same intimate hygiene during your period and especially do not douch.

That being said, it is true that your panties and therefore your intimate areas can give off unpleasant odors during your period, in particular a slightly iron-like smell of blood.

To limit these odors:

  • Change your menstrual protection more regularly. The odor is linked to stagnant blood and not to a lack of personal hygiene. Using tampons or menstrual cups can also have the effect of limiting these odors by keeping the blood inside your vagina.
  • Use intimate wipes to clean yourself after changing. Softer than a full intimate wash with water, the wipes completely remove any blood residue that may remain on your vulva and give it a delicate and natural scent. You will feel fresher.

🌈 On Gapianne, we have selected for you the biodegradable intimate wipes My Lubie . At 99.6% natural 🌱, they guarantee you a refreshed intimacy in one go. And as a bonus, they are directly flushable in the toilet after use.
