How to wash your period panties for optimal cleanliness?

Ah, period panties! These wonderful companions who offer us comfort and serenity every month. But like all good things, they deserve special care to best support us. Are you wondering how to pamper these little gems of soft technology? Do not panic ! Find out in this guide everything you need to know to clean your period panties.

Find out how to wash your period panties in 6 steps !

Your period panties don't wash like the others (and no!)

Why take care when washing your menstrual panties ? Well, for many reasons! Let's see which ones together.

Focus on their composition

  • Outer layer: This is the layer you see, usually made of a soft, comfortable fabric similar to traditional briefs, like cotton or modal.
  • Absorbent layer: This layer is generally made of very absorbent materials such as cotton or microfiber. These materials can hold several times their weight in liquid. It absorbs the menstrual flow, ensuring that the panties remain dry to the touch.
  • Intermediate layer: It is often made of a technical fabric which acts as a barrier but which also allows a certain breathability. It serves to retain the liquid inside the panties, while avoiding a feeling of humidity or heat.
  • Waterproof layer: It is usually made from thin, waterproof materials like PUL (Laminated Polyurethane). This layer prevents blood from seeping through the panties, preventing any leaks.
  • Antibacterial layer (in some models): The fabrics used here may be treated or naturally antibacterial, such as some silver or copper fabrics. Its role is to limit the development of bacteria, thus reducing odors.
  • Inner layer: Often in direct contact with the skin, it is usually made of a soft, hypoallergenic fabric, such as cotton or modal. This layer provides comfort against the skin, while helping to direct flow to the absorbent layer.

Why take care when washing your menstrual panties?

Preserve their effectiveness

Period panties are designed with specific materials that allow them to absorb and retain menstrual flow. Improper washing can compromise these absorbent properties!

Preserve their longevity

With proper care when washing, this can extend the life of your period panties (and we say yes for our savings!). Conversely, the use of aggressive products or drying at high temperatures can degrade the materials and reduce the lifespan of the product, so avoid it!

Better hygiene

Proper cleaning ensures that all traces of blood and other secretions are completely removed. Which is pretty essential to maintain good hygiene and avoid odors, right?

Prevent irritation

Detergent or fabric softener residue may remain on the fabric if the period panties are not properly rinsed. And these residues can irritate the skin, especially in such a sensitive area. So we say no to these chemicals!

Reduce environmental impact

Unless you live in a cave, we live in a time where we need to protect Mother Nature as much as possible. ❤️🌍 One of the major advantages of period panties is their reusability, which reduces waste. However, they must be washed! To maximize this ecological advantage, it is essential to maintain them correctly with detergents that are respectful of the environment, your pants and your health. A winning trio!

Wash your period panties in 6 steps

1. Rinse with cold water

Don't wait for it to dry. As soon as you take off your panties, rinse them in cold water until the water runs clear to eliminate as much of the menstrual flow as possible.

2. Do not use fabric softener

Fabric softener can compromise the effectiveness of period panties by reducing their absorbency. Also avoid detergents that contain bleaching or perfumed agents.

3. Choose your detergent wisely

Let’s take a (big) aside on laundry detergent! For clean and well-maintained menstrual panties, the choice of detergent is essential!

Many people don't realize the importance of the detergent we use on a daily basis. She doesn't just clean our clothes (including our panties); it also plays a determining role in the care of our skin and the protection of the environment. We must therefore not neglect this choice!

It is obvious that our clothes, especially our underwear, directly touch very sensitive parts of our body. This is why selecting a suitable detergent is essential to prevent irritation. In fact, poor laundry detergent can cause irritation, especially in areas where the skin is more sensitive.

It is advisable to avoid industrial detergents full of potentially harmful ingredients. Substances to avoid include sulfates, synthetic dyes and optical brighteners. These components, in addition to being potentially allergenic, have a negative impact on the environment, contaminating water and underground reserves.

It is also important to pay attention to glycerin which can reduce the absorption capacity of menstrual panties.

Choose natural detergents free of any harmful products.

4. A gentle wash

  • By hand: Use a mild soap and gently rub the panties. Be sure to rinse well to remove any soap residue.
  • Machine wash: Wash at 30°C in a net, avoiding mixing with heavy clothing which could deform it.

5. Air dry

Lay the panties flat on a towel or drying rack and let them air dry. This is the most recommended way because it preserves the durability of the panties. Forget your dryer!

6. Leave the iron in the cupboard

For fans of the iron, forget it too! The heat from the iron can damage the materials of the panties, especially their absorbent properties.

How often should I clean my period panties?

As you know, maintaining your menstrual panties is essential to ensure their effectiveness and lifespan. So after each use, it is imperative to rinse your menstrual panties in cold water as soon as you have finished wearing them. This rinsing not only eliminates most of the blood but also prevents permanent stains. Then we advise you to wash it by hand or in the machine as quickly as possible. We strongly advise you not to wait for the blood residue to dry.

I've had my period panties for a long time, how do I wash them thoroughly?

Have you switched to period panties for some time now and would you like to do a little deep cleaning? Follow the steps below:

Dip them in baking soda:

Fill a basin with cold water and add 2 to 3 tablespoons of baking soda. Submerge your panties in it and leave to soak for several hours or, ideally, overnight. Baking soda helps neutralize odors and remove stains.

Wash them by hand with mild soap:

After soaking them, empty the basin and fill it with clean water. Add a little natural mild soap (like Marseille soap) and gently wash each panty by hand.

Rinse with white vinegar:

Once finished washing, prepare a rinse solution by mixing cold water with a cup of white vinegar. Vinegar will help remove soap scum and neutralize odors while acting as a natural softener. Submerge the panties in this solution, then rinse them in cold water to remove the vinegar.

And air dry your panties:

Lay your panties flat on a clean towel or hang them on a drying rack to dry naturally. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight to prevent fading.

When to replace your period panties?

Period panties can last up to 3 to 4 years, but you need to put into action all the advice we have previously given you! Otherwise, here are some pointers to know when it's time to replace your period panties.

A reduction in its absorbent power:

If you notice that your panties are no longer absorbing as effectively as they used to or that they are leaking more quickly, it may be time to replace them.

Persistent odors:

Despite regular cleaning and maintenance, if your panties have a persistent odor that cannot be removed even after a thorough cleaning, this may be a sign that they need to be replaced.

Fabric wear:

If the outer fabric or seams of the panties begin to show signs of wear, such as holes, distended elastics, or other forms of damage, it is recommended that they be replaced.

A change of form:

If the panties no longer fit properly, have become too loose or uncomfortable, this may indicate that they have lost their original shape and it is time to replace them.

By adopting good practices for washing your period panties , not only are you preserving the quality of your period panties, but you are also contributing to healthy intimate well-being. Like everything else involving our health and hygiene, a little care and dedication will ensure that your panties serve you well cycle after cycle.
