Do you want to try anal penetration with your partner, or do you want this practice to go as smoothly as possible, painlessly and with pleasure, after more or less unpleasant attempts? The muscles surrounding the rectum are naturally tight and may require time and practice to dilate and allow for anal penetration, or even sodomy. Poppers, lubricants, sex toys: there are many solutions for dilating your anus, some of which are quick and healthy. As an e-concept store dedicated to sexuality and intimate health, Gapianne focuses on sex without taboos. In today's article, we offer four solutions for dilating your anus to please yourself.

Key points

  • Often reduced to sodomy, anal penetration nevertheless consists of a set of practices that are not limited to penile penetration. A finger or a sex toy are also anal penetrations that can be foreplay to sodomy or practices in their own right.
  • Anal poppers and anesthetic gels are solutions for practicing anal penetration without pain, but they can tend to cut you off from your sensations. This is why it seems interesting to turn instead to solutions that rely on the sensations of the receiving partner, such as digital penetration, the use of a suitable sex toy or lubricants.

Disclaimer X reminder: all sexual practices are okay as long as they are desired, consensual, and practiced with the necessary safety to suit both (or more) partners. In anal sex, as in all sexual practices, pain is not normal—if you are in pain, you have the right to stop, to slow down, to say stop. That being said, we can begin. ♥️

Before you begin: Adopt good hygiene practices

Physical preparation for anal penetration involves good hygiene practices, not only for your anus, but also for your partner's hands and penis.

  • Promote good hygiene of your anus by washing the surface with clear water, or with a soap-free cleansing gel so as not to upset your intimate flora. You can squat down a little to better reach your intimate area. 🌈 Our favorite at Gapianne is the intimate cleansing gel - Wumi . Fresh and scented with eucalyptus, this gel foams delicately when you rub. With its neutral pH, it does not attack your intimate flora and does not risk upsetting it. We like that it was formulated and developed by a French laboratory 🇫🇷 and that it is 100% natural 🌱.

  • Your partner should also ensure good penile hygiene. Cleaning the foreskin with the foreskin uncovered is recommended, using clean water or a pH-neutral soap.

  • Don't overuse enemas. While enema bulbs were once popular because they made anal penetration "cleaner," regular enemas aren't recommended. They can disrupt your intimate flora and cause discomfort. Furthermore, using an enema bulb isn't easy: don't force yourself.

  • Remember to wash your hands and trim your nails: We often talk about anal hygiene, but good hand hygiene is essential too. Trimming your nails is also a good idea to avoid scratching your partner.

  • Don't forget the condom! If you are not in an exclusive and tested relationship, it is essential to adopt the condom in case of anal penetration. Indeed, anal penetration is riskier than vaginal penetration (friction is greater in this practice, leading to more micro-abrasions responsible for the transmission of STIs). 🌈 On Gapianne, we have selected for you the condoms - My Lubie . Ultra thin to enhance sensations, they are made of natural latex. Hyper strong, they are guaranteed full pleasure and full safety!

Finally, before engaging in anal intercourse, it's essential to remember that the anus is only a "passage" point for fecal matter, not a storage area. That being said, as long as there's sexual play around the anus, it's possible to come into contact with fecal matter—even if your hygiene is impeccable. The exchange of fluids and odors is a natural part of sexual practice: you won't be able to control everything, and that's okay.

Solution #1: Use your fingers (or your partner's)

The first way to help dilate your anus is to practice digital penetration. Either yours or your partner's. Gently, ever so gently, insert one finger. Then two. Then more. Do it gently, don't force it: the more you force it, the more the muscles surrounding the rectum will tighten instead of dilating.

To facilitate penetration, you can practice it in the shower or moisten your finger with saliva or vaginal discharge. You can also opt for a lubricant. 🌈 For the practice of anal penetration, we can only recommend the rich, long-lasting water-based lubricant from My Lubie . The advantage of this type of lubricant is that it is particularly soft and lasts longer: it greatly reduces friction and facilitates penetration. Non-sticky, resistant underwater, with a neutral pH and condom compatible, this lubricant is our favorite.

Solution #2: Use an anal plug

The second way to support the gradual dilation of your anus is to use a sex toy dedicated to anal penetration. This is particularly the case with anal plugs, whose shape allows for gentle dilation of the anus. Whether conical or composed of several levels of insertion, they allow you to dilate your anus in stages. Insert it gently, wait for your anus to relax, and push it a little deeper to dilate your anus.

🌈 Our favorite anal sex toy of the moment is the anal plug - My Lubie . The Aube anal plug has the particularity of being composed of two balls, with increasingly larger diameters. The goal: to allow you to dilate your anus in several stages. Made of medical silicone for perfect hygiene, it also has the advantage of being equipped with a suction cup so you can use it alone if you wish.

To help expand your anus with an anal plug, we highly recommend using lubricant. Water-based lubricants are the best lubricants to use with sex toys because they won't damage medical silicone—unlike oil- or silicone-based lubricants. 🌈 If you suffer from intimate dryness, we recommend My Lubie Water-Based Lubricant . Water-based 💦, vegan, and 100% natural, it will protect your intimate area without upsetting it—unlike lubricants with latex, oil, or even CBD. As a bonus, water-based lubricants are compatible with medical silicone sex toys.

Solution #3: Use poppers

The third solution to dilate your anus is to use poppers. Its use is legal and you can buy them in pharmacies or online.

Poppers are a centuries-old euphoric, known for their vasodilatory properties. Their use helps dilate soft muscles, and therefore, particularly the anal mucous membranes. This will facilitate anal dilation and anal muscle relaxation, facilitating penetration by a foreign body (fingers, toys, penis, etc.).

The advantage of poppers is that they're almost immediate. This can be a good way to relax and discover anal penetration if you're apprehensive. When combined with a lubricant, popper inhalation makes anal sex much easier.

When introducing poppers to you, however, we feel it is necessary to clarify two points:

  1. Using poppers is not entirely risk-free. They must be inhaled, not ingested. Ingestion may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or headaches. Acute intoxication can lead to low blood pressure and potentially fatal cardiovascular problems, especially when taken concurrently with other drugs, such as Viagra. If you are also taking medication, do not hesitate to seek the advice of your doctor and/or pharmacist.

  2. The limitations of poppers can also be that they alter your sensations during anal penetration. The vasodilation of blood vessels in the anal mucosa has an effect on the sensations felt: it can increase them or, on the contrary, limit them. It's up to you to test and see.

Solution #4: Use an anesthetic lubricating gel

To facilitate anal penetration and reduce the pain that can be associated with this practice, anesthetic lubricating gels have been developed. They generally also contain vasodilator active ingredients to relax the muscles surrounding the rectum to promote anal dilation. Their goal is to reduce the pain that can be experienced during rapid or significant dilation of the anus. This is the fourth and final solution for dilating your anus.

💣 At Gapianne, this isn't a solution we recommend because it can be dangerous. That's why you won't find anesthetic lubricating gel on our site. Indeed, by numbing the anus, anesthetic lubricating gels don't allow you to adapt the practice to the sensations, and the risk of being injured if the anus isn't dilated enough (anal fissures and abrasions) is higher. We recommend anesthetic lubricating gel for extreme practices—and not for people new to anal sex.
